Back in 1916, the idea of large Toy shops was not in existence in Ireland, yet children did have some bought toys but also a wide variety of home-made toys.
Some of the home-made toys included Spinning Tops, Kites, dolls, carts, skates, catapults, fishing poles, see-saw’s etc…. For most of the toys, the materials required are sticks, twine, potatoes, turnips, wood, scrap material, glue, elastic and rubber. The most popular home made top of the era, appears to be the spinning top in its variety of forms.
We have included an extensive collection of home-made toys which may provide ideas for your planning of Play Day and Recreation week.
